sounds like you have hooked a one wire alternator hooked to a key switched positive so when the key is turned off the alternator then supply's power to the coil keeping the engine running.
should go battery + to key+(common) then to a resistor (resistor wire/or a coil with a internal resistor) then to the coil +. Negative side of coil goes to the dizzy. With a one wire alternator (I hope its a marine alternator and not a car alternator) you just hook the wire to the battery (battery side of starter solenoid).
If you have a enclosed engine bay the first thing you should get to work correctly is the ventilation fan in the engine bay.

I'm afraid that no wires showed up on your diagram, but maybe this will help you. The original wiring on you engine would have had a red and white wire from the alternator to the ammeter. Since you are only showing a volt meter, I'm assuming that some one changed it up. They should have connected all the wires on the two main terminals from the ammeter together (red & white, red and whatever the boat manufacturer added). If this circuit can't be repaired, you could run a new wire from the alternator to the main circuit breaker. The terminal away from the battery.
