Won't above 1500 RPM when in gear or out off gear?

I have Evinrude 1990, model# VE 50BELESR, when gives it more fuel it dies. checked compression 119, 221 psi, pulled out carbs and cleaned them also checked spark jump at 7/16 of an inch seem to be okay but whem pull out either spark plug boot it dies, run out of ideas. where do i need to start or check next, any info will be appreciated. Thank you, cal.

Is it overheating? Its possible its going into SLOW (limp mode). Connect a timing light and see if spark consistency goes wonky when it starts to limit speed. If it does look for:

-overheating
-grounded sensor wire from head
-defective sensor in head
-defective pack


Also: does it improve if you squeeze primer ball when acting up?

no ,won't help. no, not over heating either. seems to me weak spark.. thank you. took it to dealer, he changed the coil. he said something with electrical, need more time, a boat will run at about 1600 RPM if push it more than that will go put put, bog down and die. where is the sensor located.

where do i use timing light to sine it at? at fry wheel where the marking is? please give me more detail.. Thank you

You connect the timing light and just to the battery and either plug.

Look at the flashes of the light........... it should be bright and steady on both plugs. It is just a test and not aimed at timing.

I had a similar problem with my V-4 and I had a bad coil AND had a bad power pack.

Thank you. That is a big help. where is the tan sensor wire located? I just try to help my friend. this is friend of mine's engine.
