Just purchased an '87 Ebko Marine Monte Carlo 16' with Mercruiser 2.5 L and Alpha One. Went to lake today (owned boat 2 weeks now) and wouldn't go into gear. It just made a strange wizzing wining spinning noise, no prop movement. Need some help.

ALSO, belt (i think) was whining during a higher idle, needed to get idle high or it stalls, think i need to adjust something to get better idle.

Doesn't sound good my friend. 2 places to start looking.

1) Spline in the bottom of the upper drive shaft is stripped (usually rusted out).
2) Lower drive shaft is sheared above the water pump.

Good luck (you may need it).

Chris..............

Sounds like a blown coupler. Pull engine to replace and REALIGN! Also, pressure check your exhaust manifold. May have cracked from high temp.

My shift controller is REALLY sloppy, may have put it in reverse when I thought was neutral (didn't notice any loud sound or "shimmy"), would a slppy controller cause the broken part?

Is the coupler the shaft exiting back of engine? As for overheating, I shut it down at 190, never got higher than that, and only for a short time.
