I am the proud owner of a 1969 Johnson 6hp longshaft kicker. However, I cannot put it into forward or reverse. Do I have a lower until or lubrication problem? Is it something I can probably do myself or does a pro need to look at it? Thanks!

Re: Won't go in gear

Does the shifter move and click like it's working? If so maybe it broke a shear pin.

Does the shifter not move or act like it is disconnected from the gears. Linkage, shift rod or gears.

Check the lower unit oil by removing the vent and drain plugs.

To refill, refill from the bottom hole till it comes out the vent hole.

Re: Won't go in gear

Are you trying to shift with the engine NOT running? Does the shift handle move loosely, like it's not hooked up to anything?

If you're trying to shift without running the engine, the "engagement lugs" on the clutch may be lined up with the lugs on the gear face. Try turning the prop while shifting.

If the shift handle feels like it's not hooked up, you'll need to drop the gearcase to investigate.

-John
