Won't go in reverse

Hi fella's
I have a 1975 Evinrude 135hp.I just installed a new water pump, after putting it all back together I ran the controls from reverse to neutral to forward and back to neutral and all was ok.I then decided to lubricate some of the other linkages and then ran it from neutral to forward back to neutral and now it won't go into reverse on the remote control box. So I could get to the shift rod linkage to drop the gear case I did disconnect the gear and throttle linkages howewver I did put them back as they were.I did put the shift lever in reverse before I started dismantling as the workshop manual said to.I have disconnected both cables from their first linkages in the motor and tried to put in reverse again but with no luck, the control lever just stops dead and won't go past neutral. Is this something I've done or could this be a coincidence and the problem is in the remote control box , and if so what do I look for in there.

Thankfull for any help
Macca

Re: Won't go in reverse

Macca...try spinning the prop while shifting. Your reverse and clutch dog lobes may be right on top of each other. This is assuming everything was restored to original position. If that fails, disconnect the shift cable from the motor and shift the controls to reverse to verify it's not a control box or cable problem. If controls are OK, try shifting the engine by hand while spinning the prop. If that fails, recheck the shift rod connection at the motor. Post us and let us know what you find.

Re: Won't go in reverse

Macca..should have read your post a little closer. If the control will not shift to reverse with both control cables disconnected from the engine, then the problem is in the control box. Does your control box have a warm up lever and if so is it all the way down? Try moving the warm up lever up and down a couple times and then try shifting again.

Thanks heaps for your reply Outboard Jim,I will have a closer look at the control box now.Just wanted to make sure I didn't do anything real stupid. Yes I did disconnect the two cables and it still wouldn't go into reverse on the control box.I now will have a closer look at the controls and I will definetly let you know how I go

Thanks again
Macca
