Won't go into gear.

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and boating. So my problem: I was cruising in the Keys about 2000rpm for about 40 minutes when all of a sudden she seemed to jump out of gear. I shut her down and now the boat won't go into gear but the throttle does rev. No forward or reverse. The shifter cable is moving at the engine. Just no clunk and go. ​

And did the motor start to overheat when it quit spinning the prop?

The outdrive is an Apha1 GenII I think I may have adjusted it. When I put pressure on the prop while shifting gears it goes into gear. with no pressure it just rotates freely while shifting gears. With the engine running it wont go into gear. Now do I have to put it in the water for pressure on the prop for it to go into gear?
