won't idle

1983 Evinrude will start and idle then stat hearing a cough in engine ,engine shakes as if cylinder is firing out of time ,new fuel lines rebuilt carbs check reeds none stuck open both carbs sucking at throat not popping back thru
start engine it will idle until that starts every time it happen engine slows down before engine can recover process speeds up until engine shuts off. 125 psi compression on both cylinders good good blue strong spark new fuel pump

Next time this happens, pull the plugs and look for water on the plugs and cylinders.

What is your HP ?

The cough in engine sounds like its running lean. problem could be many things.

Need to know what HP Evenrude you have......

50 hp no water on plugs I have no idle adjustment inspected idle jet and carb passages all clean

I am suspecting the idle circuit in the carb is the problem. Is oring #3 in the picture in good shape?
Try temporarily putting some plumber putty or similar substance around the plug for idle jet, and also put some around the carb butterfly shaft on both sides. You may be getting too much air in leakage.

If the head is too hot to put your hand on after the motor has been running awhile, then it would be your thermostat.
