wont idle

help i have a 1966 40 johnson wont idle just backfires and dies..if you idle it up it will run rough
i have replaced plugs .030 wires, points .020 condensers coils cleaned and adjusted carb adjusted link to timer base replaced carb and flywheel from another running motor spark is good and jumps 7/16 compression is 118 on both any suggestions?

It sounds like it's still not getting enough gas on the low speed circuit. Just open the low speed needle a 1/4 turn and that should help.

Got the correct carburetor on that thing? The one with a hot-air choke?

i adjusted the needle every which way. replaced the packing and the needle. i also replaced the fuel pump. the original carb..with the auto choke
still no good....even disconnected the wires at the cut out switch and the one going to key

And when you did the carbs did you pop the welsh plugs and clean in behind where the low speed passages are??

not yet.. if i pop out the plugs can i put em back in or get a rebuild ket and replace them?...i havent ordered a kit yet i just replaced the carb from a running motor and it did the same

I used to duck pulling the plugs but got caught a couple of times so now I just get on and do them.
I use a small drill and then thread a sheet metal screw into the hole and pull them out with pliers. There are other methods used routinely, but that one works for me.
Not sure how you can get them out and reuse them.

I have always just used the ones that came with the kit , but I would think you can buy them individually at a good auto parts supply place....or maybe a marine outlet.
They will be a pretty standard size....for some reason I am thinking 1/2" and 3/8"...but someone will know and weigh in.
