Re: won't idle

When you rebuilt the carb, did you remove the soft metal plug above the idle orifaces and make sure everything was clean in there? How does it run at full throttle? Does choking it a bit help?

Could also be a crankcase leak via the top or bottom crank seals; when you have the flywheel off to clean up the points, check to see if there's any evidence of oil leaking though it. An airleak may also show up as a difference on the insulators of the spark plugs, but flaky points will also do that.

Good luck, and tell us what you find!

carburator i cleaned is good enough to eat off! as for the crank case there is a leak. its not sopping wet, could that be the reason it doesn't idle? it makes sense if some oil is on them that there would not be good contact. i thought that was normal. is this a bad thing? will the seal have to be replaced? anyway thanks to everyone who takes the time to read my posts and replies. this is a great site!

Re: won't idle

I've seen several of the early 70ties 6HP taht didnt iddle because of a leaky gasket around the low speed needle. Unscrev the small nut and check the gasket around the needle. It will draw air instead of fuel at low rpm if gesket is leaky. Sometimes it is enough to tighten the small nut the needle passe thru.
