Won't pull fuel from bowl

Hi everyone! Having problems with my 1967 18 hp Evinrude (ser. 18702R). Ran great last year, but won't start this year. Needle was stuck in the seat, so I rebuilt the carb. Got it all cleaned up, including removal and installation of new welch plug, and put it back together and reinstalled carb.

Tried starting, but nothing. Sprayed a little premix into carb and she fired right up but died. Continued this several times, but never would run on her own. Bowl is full of fuel (float height is correct), but it just will not pull fuel from the bowl. As long as I spray premix in the carb, she will continue to run. Fuel pump is pumping fine, bowl is full, good compression, but will not run without spraying premix.

Compression is 101 top cylinder and 102 bottom cylinder. Low speed needle ran in to "lightly seated" then backed out approx 1 1/2 rounds. Non-adjustable (fixed) high speed jet. I'm ready to pull my hair out! Any ideas?

Did you clean out the high speed jet good ? It's in the bottom of the float bowl behind the drain plug.

Thanks for the reply Boobie. I did clean out the high speed jet as well. Just doesn't make any sense to me. I have never seen one do this unless it had extremely poor compression or totally clogged up.

So, it runs as long as you squirt gas in? There is something wrong with that carburetor that you are overlooking. We can't see it from here. There isn't that much to it. Something is plugged up or missing. Will it even run by pulling the choke?

Tore it completely down again today. Let it sit in carb cleaner for almost 3 hours. Put it back together and reinstalled on motor. Same result. Double checked float level and it is perfect. Bowl filling up but will not pull fuel from bowl. Runs great while spraying premix into carb. In regards to your question F_R, no it wont start with choke on either. I am ready to look for another carb.

Only thing coming to mind is a bad leak in the manifold area !!

My thoughts as well CoffeeHound. I looked but ran out of daylight. Will check again tomorrow. Thanks for the reply. Will let you know how it turns out.
