Hello All!

I am very new to boating and was given an old 12ft aluminium, with a 1965 Evinrude 9.5 Sportwin from my landlord. This is my first boat, and although I grew up working on dirt bikes, cars, atv's, etc. I am not familiar with outboards AT ALL. The motor hasn't been started in over 6 years, and after cleaning and rebuilding the carburetor, new spark plugs and points set to 20 thou, I am unable to get the motor running. After this I took a deeper look into everything and pulled the head off, to find that the lower cylinder was filling up very quickly with fuel. Luckily I found the reeds to be stuck open which I believe is what was causing the cylinder to fill as after pulling the reeds, cleaning them and checking for proper operation, the cylinder was no longer filling up. It is getting great spark and proper fuel flow. However, I am missing the linkage for the low speed mixture knob, and not entirely sure what it should be set at for start up (I set it roughly 1 1/2 turns out). I did get it to turn over and run for about 4-5 seconds on a few occasions, however it cut out right afterwards. I am just wondering if there is anyone more knowledgeable about these motors than I am that could help me out, and point me in the right direction on where to start.

Thank You!

What is your compression, will the spark jump a 1/4" air gap, have you taken the carb apart and cleaned all the passages?

the carb must be totally clean … go on utube for good videos

did you check the HS jet behind the 7/16 bolt at the bottom of the carb.. peek inside to see it

the LS linkage is missing but you can adjust the LS needle by hand a few times anyway

they are great motors keep at it

Don't loose the rear flat head bolt holding the carb to the engine body !!

you can clean the HS jet with a fine wire or monofilament but DO NOT DAMAGE the orifice !!

Compression is great. The carb has been rebuilt and everything has been thoroughly cleaned. I just finished rebuilding the carb and managed to get it running for around 25 seconds before it cut out on me. By all means it didn’t sound healthy when it was running, but it ran. I’m thinking it’s still having difficulty getting enough fuel. Also, fuel was pissing out of the little vent on the top of the carburetor quite heavily when it was running. Any ideas on what may cause that?

Just pulled it back apart, reseated the float, and needle valve. Got it to run and idle (rough idle), for a good minute or so and then cut out on me again like it cut the fuel for some reason.

Starting to sound like contaminated fuel that gets the needle valve plugged up as soon as it gets gas into the float bowl. Check the fuel and the gas tank inside for contamination. If it's contaminated, you will clean the carb and it gets plugged up real soon again and again. Just an idea I had.

Seems like a fuel problem, but are you running water through it to keep it cool?

We had checked the fuel and all is good. Tank is brand new.

Sometimes old carbs just won't come clean the first time. Some I have cleaned 2 or 3 times and they still won't work right. A cheap Hydrosonic cleaner can do the trick sometimes. Other times it will take pulling out the so called aluminum welsh plugs that hide some very small passages. Good luck getting them back in! Other times it just takes another carb if you can find one. This is called a reality check.
