have a 60hp johnson, 85'. Idles fine, runs smooth in gear but will not run up to speed. Can speed it up in idle with throttle runs great. Put it in gear and it runs smooth, but not fast enough. Checked compresion OK, carbs rebuilt and clean, not sure what to do now? Any suggestions would be great

LCS
good compression is a great sign. wait til it's dark and take off the motor cover and see if there are any arcing which robs the recquired juice to power the spark plugs. could be spark plug wires, boots, coil itself, or stator starting to go when its windings loose their protective shield. hope this helps you get started trouble shooting.

Have you checked for fuel starvation? Does the bulb stay pumped up? If not, what happens when you pump it while trying to run at high speed?

Are you achieving max rpm's? but just not moving fast? Or is the engine only reaching half throttle?

Check to make sure the timer base is coming around to full advance when you go full throttle.
