Re: wont shift into reverse

The shift interrupt system is only used when coming out of gear, not going in.
I would look for a faulty or out of adjustment cable. If it's out of adjustment, my guess it's because the cable is worn out on the inside causing too much slop in the movement.

Re: wont shift into reverse

Does it Hang in-gear(Forward) ???
or, go to Neutral,+ Not shift into Reverse ?????

Either Way,
I Really Doubt there's anything Wrong with the Interupter Switch.........

Much more likely the Cable........

Re: wont shift into reverse

redman, i got a bit older boat than you, but had a simaler problem. i couldn't get reverse without much gear clash. i did a shift cable adj. and adj. the interupt switch. works great now. the way i'm seeing it is. if it won't come out of gear, fwd to N or rev. to N, then the shift interupt switch is either out of adj. or not switching. or if as in my case, would not go into rev without gear clash. a shift cable adj. mine was out of adj as that when attempting rev. it would start to apply throttle before the shift happened, hence the clash(i think the cable stretched over time). the adj. got the shift to happen before throttle is applyed. good luck,,, jim

Re: wont shift into reverse

I new you guys could give me some direction to start at.It comes out of forward, goes into neutral, can not get it in rev. If i shut off the eng it will go right in but with it in gear it wont come out of forward. I was watching the cable on to of the engine and it would start to bow if you tried to force it. What do you guys think Thanks agin Redman

Re: wont shift into reverse

redman, hum, well, think i'd approach it this way. disconnect the shift cable. you should be able to manualy shift into F or R by manipulateing the shift cable going to the outdrive. have a helper rotate the prop counter clockwise and see if it the prop locks, as in F. pull the cable the other way and rotate the prop clockwise and see if the prop locks up, Reverse. asumeing that's ok, i'd try to operate the remote and see if the cable moves free. seems like there's a spec on length of cable, ya might want to look that one up. aslo, my 165 has a bunch of levers that operate when the shift cable is moved. reckon they's the throttle and lost motion for a single lever remote. i thinki i's see if those nylock nuts have got to tight and restricting movement. my 2 cents worth(guesss), ya gotta start somewhere,,,,, this info is related to my 72 I drive, ya might have a much newer drive than me. jim
