I have just inherited a 1990C Force 90 hp. Ran pretty good for a couple of months but now won't start when put in the water. It starts and runs fine on land. Otherwise runs well. It's only been the last couple of months that starting in water has been an increasing problem. Before that it started and ran well, maybe a little under powered (prop?) for heavy skiers, but otherwise pulled 200 lbs. OK. I thought it was strange but the parts house said maybe the exhaust was blocked causing lower compression when the exhaust was in the water.

Checked compression, all about 90 to 100 psig. Ran 1 can of decarb and got another 10 psig. Pulled the head off, cylinders smooth, no scaring, no ridge at top, and appears to have been bored to 0.030". Don't know if outboards leave a ridge like auto engines. No info on rings and pistons, but pistons are stamped 3R on top. No carbon buildup on top of pistons.

Any suggestions? How about another can of decarb, or maybe one for each carb? Or is it time for overhaul?

I haven't tried ether or carb cleaner to assist starting, just regular mix.

Any ideas are appreciated,

Wayne
