Hi

I am stumped and looking for advice. Motor is 1968 55hp johnson. compression is 85 90 90 psi. Motor started running poorly and now often won't start. Problems began when I would try to open it up, would miss a little sometimes stall but eveuntualy miss would go away and run ok. Stalling problem slowly go worse and finaly would not start so brought it home and cleaned out carbs and checked spark and ignition. Put it on flusher and ran fine but got it to lake and would not start. let it sit for awhile, started and acted as before with miss when opening up throttle then died and can't start it again. I have checked spark and looks ok at each cylinder. Fuel pump seems ok as bulb does not go soft and spraying premix into carbs does not seem to help.

My guesses are problems with points, timing or powerpack but not sure. Also, may not be related but sometimes ignition acts dead until I move throttle back and forth into neutral and then acts normal. Also when only slightly out of neutral in either forward or reverse, prop will still turn with starter.

Don't want to start replacing parts randomly so any help diagnosing problem is appreciated.

When you cleaned out the carbs did you completely disassemble, soak overnight, blow out with high pressure compressed air, install new kits, adjust the float and reassemble - - ?

Yes, did all the above ( except mayble did not remove the bearing or whatever it is in the low speed adjustment. In any case, I ended up replacing the power pack and converting over to an auto coil system and it seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for the help
