I got a 1959 35h RDS-21-B is the model. I got good compression. Also got spark. I ahve the manual to the motor. Cleaned the carb I just can't get no fire. All it does is pop every now and again. The compression is within 4 lbs of each other. Any ideas on what to do next would be great.

read these: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158071
(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle va /lve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, wating for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Re: won't start

Thanks for the page about the outboards that won't start I was actually looking for that forum and could not find it. My spark plugs are not getting a great blue spark they are sparking but not a bright blue. I am also choking it all the way and not the plugs are wet when you pull them out.

Re: won't start

if ur at least getting some spark it should least run a bit. how good is it? i must add though if there not wet then u might not be getting any fuel to the engine. make sure u have it primed nice and good and do the needle adjustment for the intnital settings then try it out again and if dont start check again for fuel when u put the spark plugs to ur hand

Re: won't start

yes when I got the motor the nut that holds the flywheel down was gone I had to get a nut off ebay sent down from IL what is the torque supposed to be on the flywheel. Would that keep the motor from starting because the nut is at the right torque the spark plugs are getting fuel I clean them off and than pull them out again they are wet and a little black

Re: won't start

I believe the comment on the "flywheel" was to make sure that the key was not sheared, thus putting your timing off.

Try spraying soem premix down the carb throat..see if it wakes up.

BUT, DO NOT run the motor until the flywheel is properly torqued down! I do not know the specs, but I'm sure someone who does will chime in! Do this first!

Re: won't start

After all this the question is can you have your spark plug wires backwards and if you can will that keep it from starting

Backwards wires equals firing without compression equals no combustion.

Re: won't start

did u put a new rebuild kit in there with the new float. change the impeller? must do before u run it.

well how good is ur spark? bright whitish blueish makes soudns when it turns over? as for the needles just turn them to 3/4 way out for now for the hgih speed and low speed 1 1/2.

make sure u have everything on correctly lol backwards fire to plugs.:p

before u torque the flywheel down tell us spark. have u replaced coils condosors points and gapped them to .020? and i believe its good to torque it to 70 foot pounds. ive been working on like the same motor.

Re: won't start

just spraying the carb does absolutely no good, except wastes the spray. the carb has to be taken apart, needles remove and orifices clean, then reassembled with a carb kit.

Torque should be 60-65 ft.lbs for that motor. Also note the front-most coil fires the top cylinder. Sometimes there is a little metal clip on the top cylinder wire at the spark plug end.
