I have a inboard/outboard 1976 Caravelle Ford motor, with 140 merc crusier on it. I am not getting any spark on the plugs. Before this I had to have the starter rebuilt and I put on a new silonoid because the engine wouldn't turn over. Now it does but there is no spark. We tested the coil wire to the cap and rotor. Those alll look good. So on the coil, we are getting 12v on the negative side but nothing on the + side? So are we right to think the coil is shot, since we are not getting voltage to the plugs?

Nope,...

Have you checked the Points,..?? They fire the coil....

Btw, a 140hp Mercruiser ain't a Ford motor, nor does it have anything to do with OMC, which is this forum...
Maybe ya can clarify just what ya got, before I move this thread to the Merc forum...

Re: won't start?????

I think you need to come up with some engine serial numbers off the metal tag just above and aft of the starter.
Ford motor and 140 Mercruiser aren't even close to the same since the 140 is GM.
If you don't have the serial number, can you post some pictures of the engine?

I would bet money you need a set of points, not a coil.
Might want to do some searching up in the Adults only sticky at the top of this forum. Lots of engine info.

If you don't have +12V on the positive side you shouldn't have +12V on the negative side. You might have the wires reversed.

Could the wires be on reverse on the silonoid when I put it back on? I could of swore I put them back on right. Tomorrow we are going to check the points. Also bypass the ignition to the coil. My dad also thinks its wierd there is 12v on the neg and not the +. I will post tomorrow night after we look at it. TY!

It is a slave. If you turn the key and the starter turns over it works. I'm talking about coil wires check wiring diagram to make sure the wires are going to the correct location (both ends). + is probably going to a relay.

Stop and SLOW DOWN.
"Also bypass the ignition to the coil" no coil , no spark.
one of the wires that goes to the coil will have voltage with the key in the "on" position. that goes to the + side of the coil. the neg side of the coil will have 1 black wire going to the dist, points.
that should make it spark and run if the points are in working condition and the gap is correct.
Get that far and we can try to figure out the rest.like the tach lead, and shift interupter
