Won't start

I purchased a Crestliner (1986?) with 70 Hp Johnson. First trip out it ran fine for about an hour. We stopped for lunch and after that it would not start. Rowed to a dock and called for help. By the time help arrived my son had started the engine by lifting the choke handle up a far as possible and cranking for long periods.
Had a tune up done by a Maarine Repair business. Next time out we ran for about an hour and again stopped for lunch. The engine would not restart. Tried the choke routine and cranking but no start. Fortunately good simaritans towed us to dock. Does anyone have suggestions for what the problem is? Thanks. Soddy

Weak ignition components tend to fail once the engine heats up to normal operating temps. If you are running, the stop for a while, the water pump also stops. So, the already warm powerhead can't dissipate the heat, and it gets much warmer than "normal" for a while. A very normal thing on all engines, but a possible problem on one with weak electrical parts. This extra heat could be causing ignition components to malfunction till the powerhead has a chance to cool down. Not a very convenient problem. So, next time the engine won't restart after running, check all 3 plugwires to see if they have spark.

Any time an engine runs and then stops and won't crank again, the first thing you have to do is figure out if it is a fuel delivery issue or ignition problem. And that can be isolated by checking for spark on all cylinders. If there is no spark, you just cut the problem in half. If there is spark and cranks with no running, you have a fuel delivery issue. So that divides the problem and then you can work that issue... JMHO!

How does the engine run before you stop? Does it run well in high and low revs? An ignition problem can faintly be noticed when only running in low revs. How did the motor start the next trip in the beginnen when he was cold?

Thanks for your information. I now have the boat and motor at a Marina and think they will find the solution. Learn something every day. Thanks again. Soddy
