Hello, first time iboater here. I've been using these threads to help me troubleshoot my outboard issues.
- I bought a used 2003 merc. 40hp 2 stroke (2cyl- 1 carb)
- first day on the water had to run at high RPM/idle in order to keep running - clunked the gears pretty good.
-Came home and cleaned(not bad)/ rebuilt carbs, noticed the float level was off and adjusted.
-new gas in tank with additive
-new primer bulb
-cleaned fuel filter (not bad)
-rebuilt fuel pump
-new plugs
-good compression reading 120/123
-spark on both cylinders
-top plug wet/bottom dry. ???
-tested CDI all reading were at the lowest within the threshold
-replaced solenoid (corroded and trim tilt/no start symptom early on)
-bendix on starter got chewed and stuck-regreased shaft and it's fine BUT there is alot of tiny metal flakes basically covering the stator and top of motor.
- she starts right up first try and idles great! until it's warm about 5 min.. starts to bog down, I press the choke and it helps it to keep running. I dont want to run the risk of shifting during a high idle to keep it running. tried adjusting idle and air mix in water, but as it warmed up it just bogged down and out no matter the adjustment.
-checked reed valves and from what I can see (very little) it looks fresh in there.
?vacuum leak?
?going bad CDI?
how long is 2 stroke oil good for?
?proper mix? (it's injected)
seems like it's starving of fuel when it gets warmed up ooor when it's warm the timing slows and fuel pulse isn't strong enough?
Please Help! First boat and I have tried just about everything.. you all helped me get this far, let's go all the way!
