Hi, I will be building a wooden steering console for my boat. What paint would you recommend that can be sourced at the average hardware store? Need it for protections and looks! Boat is stored indoors so UV damage probably isnt a huge concern. Thanks

Is your new wooden console going to made to see the wood grin, or not? Because if you are building the console to just made a console for gauges and such, I would apply some polyester resin and CSM (chopped Strand Matt) fiberglass to make it waterproof. And then you can use whatever type paint you like. Most use Rustoleum type paint with a catalyst hardener (Majic sold at tractor supply) added. And that makes it sealed and fuel proof and shiny at the same time.

If your project is for a different reason. tell us more for better ideas and suggestions. JMHO

Sorry. I should have specified a couple more things. Its just a console with a couple gauges and a steering wheel. I do NOT want to use any fiberglass, I just want to be able to roll/brush on and be done. I dont want to see the wood grain, and this console will be in the middle of the boat far away from fuel. Thank you for your reply

Okay, the Rustoleum still will work perfectly. However I would still use the additional hardener because it make the paint harder, shinier dry quicker and resist scratching and such. JMHO

If it’s plywood it’s not going to last very long with just paint... When it gets wet it will start to delaminate ...
Paint will help but not for long...

IMHO this IS a perfect situation for using the Old Timers Recipe and then the Rustoleum Paint Process. That would yield sealed plywood with a No Wood Grain Finish. For a console you could use 2 cups BLO, 4 cups MS, and 2 cups Spar Varnish. That would probably be more than enuf to do the job
