nasty, it all depends on how much maintainance you want to have, you can sand them down and apply 3-6 coats of quality varnish, then every spring & fall sand off a coat and apply more to keep it fresh,or you can sand it down and apply a good wood preservative ( Cabots).the choice is made based on work & looks.

Consumer stores sell products labeled spar, but...
don't think Miniwax is marine spar, that you want. Call a paint store.

Nasty, Minwax "spar" is called spar due to its ability to "flex" some...back in the old days regular ol' varnish was very brittle when dry,and had a tendency to flake off, especially off of the mast or "spar" so additives where introduced to allow flexing without flaking...BUT marine grade varnish has alot of UV inhibitors allowing it to outlast regular varnish...so, as mentioned above,go with a Marine Grade varnish, after using everything out there,i highly recommend Epifanes. Or even Awlgrip makes a clear coat, but its dam expensive.
Application : cut the first coat 50% w/ thinner, this will allow greater penetration of the varnish, Cut 2nd coat 25%,then apply full strength, results will last far longer..Good Luck.
