I have a whaler with a wooden console that is in pretty bad shape. Can i use epoxy resin on the wood to preserve it and than paint it with a top paint?

Epoxy resin will seal the wood but it also depends on what you are working with. You can coat the entire console with poly resin and csm, sand and fair out smooth, then apply paint.

Is the console mahogany? Teak? Plywood? Some wood does not take resins. Have you looked at the completed projects section at this Whaler? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=261834

You just about have an unlimited seletion of what you can do ....it depends on the results you are trying to achieve.

The wood is a mix of mahogany and plywood. I'm just looking to preserve the new and existing wood and paint a nice finish on it.

Well do not use resin alone. I would use a layer of csm and that will also add strength. The key to a superb finish is all in the prep work.

Great question! I love brightwork, it's beautiful, classy, but it can be a job and is a dying art, but I still build and finish it. It's no surprise that it is not used much any more. You say the console is in bad shape? Take some photos if you would and maybe it can be resurrected properly to suit. Photos taken up close of the worse places will help even more. I'd love to help you with refinishing or even duplicating as new, but chances are, logistics would interfere. You have a fun project and it's certainly worth the effort and expense because you're working with a Whaler. Actually there are sources for new Whaler wood too!
