Woodgrain Finish on interior.

The woodgrain finish has mostly faded or peeled off. It is on the side consoles and the "tray" or "shelf" that runs the length of the gunwhale.

The consoles are made of fiberglass, and the shelf is made of extruded aluminum. Any suggestions on how to remove the remainder from the aluminum without damaging it?

I am thinking of polishing up the aluminum parts rather than put new woodgrain finish on it. The consoles would look nice with new woodgrain, but I need to know what will hold up in the sun, heat, salt and water.

Most of the contact wood I found in the stores is for interior use, and I am afraid it will fade or crack in the sun.

Thanks, Mark.

Mark42,

I would forget the woodgrain altogether, if you can. It really dates the boat and no matter what you put on there, it's going to fade.

You might try some acetone in a spot which is not very visible.

What about remaking the panel out of real wood?
