One of those bid red headed (pilliated?) woodpeckers expanded one the vent holes and has moved in above the insulation level in the shop.
We had put up stainless steel vents but the little bugger worked around that!
NOW WHAT DO I DO?????
thanks

If it were me, I'd try to live with it. Heck, I'd try to make it more comfortable. We have very few of those here and I think they're quite majestic.

I hope you don't have a wood boat in the shop.

The pileated woodpecker is a federally protected species. You're not actually publicly advising in writing on iBoats that a member commit a federal crime, right?

You misunderstood his post.
"410" = reference to this past April 10
"w/ 7" = he spent time with his 7 year old son
"1/2" = on the boat half the day
"shot!!!" = great pictures were taken

Sounds to me like your shop now has a mascot! Just change the name to Woody's and only work on fiberglass & aluminum boats!:D:D If it were me I'd feed it...although I think they eat grubs. Seriously though, you may want to get an exterminator in to check for termites - that bird's there for a reason (i.e. food).

Expand your screening and lock him out. Yes, they are protected so I would just lock him out.

Maybe a small investment into a bird repellent gel called Hot Foot.

No ,I didn't realize they're protected. Perhaps USFW will come and relocate the bird.

perhaps some hanging pie plates or something will scare them off? I can't imagine how destructive that bird can be when it is your own building.

The tasty solution appeals to me. Had some turtle soup in the Bahamas last year.. sure was good!

Yeah, they really hit stuff HARD! I have them out here on a regular basis. Heard one Friday morning thumping a pine tree. Looked out and saw big hunks of slash pine bark flying all around. Dunno if the pie plates would work or not.

get a hawk or an owl and make it a party....maybe you can find an audio recording of one, see if that drives him out.

I think the hammering can be a social thing too. We had one that decided it liked to bang on an aluminum ladder. from about a quarter mile away it was bearable.

Go to tractor supply and get one of those plastic owls, it got them out of my yard, along with the squirrels, chipmunks, and ground hogs. Just remember to move it around every so often.

You may want to take a look at what the thing is digging for, they don't dig into wood unless there's insects there to eat. They often dig open the wood, let the sap run and return to eat the insects caught in the fresh sap.

Your liable to find that he's feasting on termites or something up there.
Wood peckers are fairly common around here, most have a red head but I'm not sure what species they are as there are several with red heads. They're usually pecking at dead limbs up high in the trees.
