Re: woodpecker moved into the shop

I own a log home. Everything that can/will bore into wood has attacked it at one time or another. I'm surprised I don't have carpenter deer clawing their way in...

One day, I go out on the farmer's porch to get some wood for the stove and see a new 3.5-4" hole drilled into the underside of the soffit. A pileated wood pecker has set up a nice little nest for himself.

We've had many woodpeckers going after bees in the facia boards and so on and some that just like to hammer on the hollow sounding boards or gutters. I understand that is a territorial thing.

I took a cue from mouse discouraging techniques and stuffed the new hole with steel wool. The woodpecker didn't like that one bit and hasn't been back since. Might be worth a try.

Now that sounds like a really neat idea!

Steel wool is awesome to discourage pests,.... after replacing aluminum facia three times on a customers house,... I stuffed it with the wool, squirrel didn't like the way it felt and moved on :D

Go to tractor supply and get one of those plastic owls, it got them out of my yard, along with the squirrels, chipmunks, and ground hogs. Just remember to move it around every so often.

You may want to take a look at what the thing is digging for, they don't dig into wood unless there's insects there to eat. They often dig open the wood, let the sap run and return to eat the insects caught in the fresh sap.

Your liable to find that he's feasting on termites or something up there.
Wood peckers are fairly common around here, most have a red head but I'm not sure what species they are as there are several with red heads. They're usually pecking at dead limbs up high in the trees.
local bank got one of those owls a while ago ,it funny as hell seeing the pigeons roosting on top of its head and beside it!

The plastic Owl worked for my neighbor getting a woodpecker to leave, You might get one from HF that has a motion detector in it that "hoots" and flashes it eyes,,Cost about 20 bucks. I got one to tantilize the wifes cats but they werent afraid of it.....pissed the wife off when she saw what I was trying to do.

No one noticed where rbh is from. I don't think US laws apply there!
