Re: Work after retirement.

Depends, CH.

Do you need income from employment or can you get by on retirement and SS?

If you need income you are going to get the jobs that HS dropouts don't want, or you are going to be a contractor in your specialized skills.

If you can get by, usually the result of learning the difference between what you really need and what you merely want, the world is your oyster.

Volunteering help by doing what you do well for others, free, is very satisfying. Be a Big Brother, take old folks fishing, coach pee wee sports, get into local politics, etc.,etc.

Moderating and helping on iboats is the best job I ever had. The rewards far surpass anything I ever did for money.

What are you other retired gentlemen and ladies doing?

Re: Work after retirement.

I would heave to agree with JB on depending on what you need to survive.

I retired from 22 years as over the road truck driver, and although my retirement was quite good, I just could not sit around and do nothing so I started my courier service and am happy I did.

For 2 reasons, 1, I put people to work, and 2, I could do it from home while taking care of other business also.

I also own a lawn care business which is quite profitable, but it is seasonal and so the courier service fills a void for me.

Now having said all that, I have gotten a real good proposal for my courier service business which the mrs and myself have been talking about.

I feel that we need just a little more time for ourselves so by this time next week, I might not have the courier service.

But like I said, it all depends on what you want after you retire. And what your needs, money wise, will be.

Hi Carphunter, I understand your problem, I already picked out my dream retirement job; working at Winn Dixie handing out the shopping carts, it's perfect, low pressure, no lifting, no problem with eggs on the bottom, and with little thought required, which is about all I can manage anyway, and with adequate training I can probably remember the required phrase, "good morning (sir or madam)" The sir or madam will be the tough part what with some of the freaks I see walking the streets. :p

Hmm.. You got some talents there, Carphunter.
I am in the same dilemma, with 79 days to go.
I'm trying to get on with a local hospital, as I must find an income. I could stay-on with my current employer, but for 30years, I have stayed here, supressing the urge to just up and quit, time-after-time, year-after-year, saying, "I gotta hang tough. I have to retire from this place to lock-in my pension at a livable rate".
Well, here I am, and the rate is not livable. No regrets, and I'm not complaining. I just was hoping to get completely bored of fishing, getting-up whenever, watchin soap operas 'till I threw up....And then, go find a part-time job.
But, now I have to jump out of the fryin pan into another frying pan.
hmmph.

Re: Work after retirement.

I plan on retiring in just about a year. I will have near 40 years in the power plant business. About 13 years ago, my Dad and me started a marine business. Anything needed for the sport we tried to keep on the shelf. Next thing ya' know, she herself and my Mom decides we need to expand. So we started handling fishing supplies. We get our stuff from the same place Bass Pro gets there stuff. Well, the little Marine repair busines sorta mushroomed and is doing quite well. Plan on going full time there when I retire......which ain't near soon enough. One thing for sure.....what ever ya' do, make sure it's what ya' want to do. Doing something just for the sake of doing it can be near bad as not doing anything at all. Just my opinion. Ya' know....I jist keep wonderin' how I would do as a big time Bass Hunter. Hmmmmm. Hey! How bout' chasin' aleuns. Now that would be fun!!!! :D :D :D

Re: Work after retirement.

I have a ways to go till retirement. But when I do, I have it all planned out. I will open a guitar repair shop, and work on peoples guitar. But my main work will be building new ones. There is something so pleaceful about creating something with your hands. I figure by the time I retire, I will be a pro at building guitars. Plus, if the day is nice, I could just go out on the boat instead. I wont work because I have too, but because I want too. Hope life is good to me till then so I can live my dream.

For the record, I have a ways to go until retirement also. I guess I am really interested in the things I can do to retire early!!!

There are just too many lakes to fish, and not enough time.

Re: Work after retirement.

Morning CH....just an observation here. I fish with a group of guys that we call the regulars. Since I've started fishing with them, three have retired. And without exception, they all say they don't know where they are going to get the time to do this or that. It's curious to note that the length of the day shortens when ya' retire. I can't wait to find out if this is true or not! :D :D
