Worn clutch dog?

I'd appreciate some experienced opinions about the condition of a 1986 Force 125hp clutch. Reverse hasn't worked right for some time (took high revs to engage) but it could have been a cable issue. This boat/motor is new to me, and the previous owner definitively didn't take very good care of the boat. Debating if the clutch and/or gears need to be replaced. Thanks for the help!

I've seen worse than what you have that worked just fine once the linkage was adjusted correctly.

To me it looks like you have to replace both the gear and clutch dog. The edges should be sharp and perpendicular.

Have you tried to adjust the shift linkage? As it is the reverse you do not have so much throttle. Maybe it will hold it in gear, but to be 100% sure change the dog and the gear.

I agree with pnwboat. Not that bad.
The gear looks the worst but still not bad enough to replace.

You can resurface the edges instead of buying new.
If you but new I believe you need to re-shim the forward gear.

The dog if your really worried about it you can turn it around and the best edge will be in the F position.
From the look the cables need the work.
MAYBE??? the seal where the shift rod goes through is bad??
The corrosion builds up around the base of the seal and squeezes the seal and makes it hard to shift.
Since you have it all apart?? replace the seal anyway!!

Thanks for the replies. I adjusted the cables/linkages/etc for quite awhile, but could never get things to line up right. I ran out of adjustment range before reverse would engage properly. I guess I'll try resurfacing for now and see if it does the trick.

Any tutorials on adjusting the linkages correctly? I fought with it for awhile and played with adjustments on the motor, at the throttle box, etc and never got things to work right. The mechanical stop (preventing higher throttle when not in gear) seemed to always be in the way of making the proper adjustments. What's the right order for adjusting linkages/cables?

It really sounds like the seal on the shift rod is gummed up or the cable might be bad.
I had to change mine every 10 years.(cables)
With the cable connectors unhooked can you get F and R?
Start the motor and shift by hand. Watch out for prop.Best if done in the water and away from others or on the trailer.

That work?

Under the bottom carb is a nut on the very top of the shift rod.
It's a 1/2 and can be reached and loosened.
Loosen the top nut and adjust the 2nd one up or down to extend the linkage.

With the dogs out already, might as well resurfaced them. Machinist can actually rebuild it and have it squared. As for the adjustment, Jerry mentioned it using the top of the rod adjustment below the bottom carb. If you follow the mechanical linkage from the engine cowling you cannot miss it.
