Worn groove in shaft?

I am wondering how to go about fixing the drive shaft on my 1965 9.5hp. As the picture shows there is a groove worn into the shaft were the seal rides below the impeller plate. How much of a groove is to much. I measure .0015" of difference while rotating the shaft on the surface plate at work. I'm not sure if this is enough to worry about when I put a new seal in or not. Has anyone else had this problem with a drive shaft leaking or not? Thanks

A machine shop can fill that groove in and machine the weld down to smooth factory specifications.... whatever the diameter of the shaft is. They usually insert a bronze type material.

Re: Worn groove in shaft?

Looking back through some of the similar posts I think that I am going to machine a plastic spacer about and 1/8 thick and put it into the housing first then press the seal into position. That way the seal will be riding on a new location on the shaft. I have the ability to tig weld the shaft but see no reason to if I can go the other route. Any ideas?

I think that 1/8 may be too much. But if the top of the the seal housing is level with the top of the carrier and flush with the impeller plate, it should work.
