as i was putting my outdrive back on after a gimbal bearing replacement i noticed that my bellhousing has some decent slop to it. i believe worn hinge pins would cause this correct? are the hinge pins replaceable or will i need a whole new gimbal ring?

i believe the bellhousing being so loose is contributing to a bilge leak i have as well.

And no, a loose bell will NOT cause water leaks by itself....

Are you talking about the pins that are for turning, or the ones for tilting up and down? I bought off the shelf bushings and had a machine shop install them in my belhousing for the tilt movement, was a very inexpensive fix that will last for years. The worn area is in the photos. you can see how the grease relief groove from the pin, is standing out from the casting.

Re: worn hinge pins

it is an 88 alpha 1 gen 1. i think they're all worn because the bellhousing moves up down and side to side:eek:

the outdrive gasket was almost completely disintegrated too and the o ring for the water inlet was barely there as well so many spots were i could imagine a leak could form so maybe that was a contributing factor to that leak.

either way i'd like to get the bellhousing tight as thats prob why my boat wanders at low speeds

the pins rarely become worn,(they are stainless steel) its usually the aluminum gimbal ring or the bell housing itself

sounds like you have a lack of maintenence problem too

have you looked at the gimbal ring too?? the upper steering pin can cause wear on the ring and cause steering play - due from a lack of maintenece

It's still going to wander a little though. ALL rear-drive v-bottom boats do it at slow-speed regardless of how tight the steering is.....

Re: worn hinge pins

SS gimbel ring pins are typically not the wear point. The aluminum gimbel ring is but you have a problem if that is so. Look into WHY the gimbel ring is so loose it is worn out. Gen 2 Out drives are not that old and if worn out where is the wear coming from? Horrendous vibrations in the upper end or U joints, bad motor mounts, grit in the grease, no grease, broken gimbel...?

Fixing the problem may be simple, finding why is what I'd be hunting for BEFORE you put on another ring.
