Last night i bougt a 10 hk johnson from 1960, a engine that costed about 25 dollar. I bougt it to have a tillerarm because the tillerarm on my 18 hp (FD-17m)was missing. Today i began to check the rest of the motor and it showed me that the gear wasnt working. I unsrewed the skeg and screwed it back together, and then it was running; in reverse. Either i had it in neutral or in forward it was still going in reverse, and i cant pull the knob into reverse either. What is rong with it?

Re: worn lower unit on 10 hp QD-21

Hi Henning...

On the starboard side of the midsection is an oblong cover held on with two screws. Behind the cover is the shift rod connector which connects the upper and lower shift rods. Remove the cover and make sure both rods are still connected.

If so, turn the prop and move the shift lever back and forth and watch the shift rod connector.

If the connector is moving up and down, the problem is likely in the lower unit. Broken shift yoke possibly.

If the shift rod does not move, then the trouble is above. Perhaps the retaining nut that holds the upper shift rod to the shift lever has come lose. Or maybe the shift lever arm has broken.

Hope we have helped.
