Re: Worst car you have owned

My first vehicel was a 1946 Willy's Jeep. Anytime it went over 40MPH the front fenders flapped like a wet dog's ears. ALways had to haver a copilot so we could each stick a leg out the door to hold the fenders on.
Then I got a 764 Ford Falcon. Bondo Buggy. First time I washed it I poked 3 holes through the Bondo. Just had my 30th High School reunion and yup, they were still caling me Bondo. Clutch was so bad I had to push it to get it moving and then it would kind of take hold. Great sex car with two bench seats.

63 Rambler American. What a heap. The floor was rotted to the point that you could see the road going by. Oil eatin, smoke belchin, noise makin POS if I ever saw one. Man those were the days!!!

When I first got married we bought a Mercury Topaz, That car ran like crap from day one. One day the tranny started to slip, I was so pissed that I drove it over to the dealer and traded even up for a dodge K wagon that was 3 years older than the Topaz. That wagon gave me years of trouble free service.

74 vega. First mtr was 140 ci. single barrel carb. Second mtr 140 ci with a 2 bbl carb. That boosted gas milage fron 10 miles per gal to 30 miles per gal. If it was over 80 degrees outside you might get 20 miles before you were on the side or the road letting it cool off.

Once, I had to take my wife's Grandfather's car to the shop for him. It was the only vehicle that I ever felt compelled to roll down the window at a traffic light and tell the complete stranger next to me that this is not my car.

That's right, an AMC Pacer!

'72 Vega hatchback with powerglide transmission.
Darn thing made the Exxon Valdez look like a ring around the bathtub.

Or maybe the '74 model Austin Marina. Kind of like a Datsun B210 built by British Leyland.
That car was such a POS it was funny!!
If it rained you dumped oil on top of the dist. to insulate it and keep the engine running.

1952 4 door chevy slant back 213 6 cly, didnt run but it had a 3 speed on the floor! Came with two engines for 25 bucks
We made one running motor out of the two.
IE: We hammered all 24 push rods on a 2x4 then rolled them on the front steps and used the 12 straightest
The ball on the clutch linkage was broke but a pop bottle cap wedged in there worked just fine.
This all happened in a flash:
The day we got it running, we both jumped into the car. Put into fist and let out the clutch! The steering wheel comes off and the front bench seat rolled over backwards dumping both of us in the back seat!
A couple months later on a a wet dark night driving home to St Johns Or from Vancouver Wa we were pulled over by the Wa state patrol. He stopped us because we were doing 40 in a 60 mph area on I5. (my speedo was reading 60) When he asked me to shut the motor off he was quick to see that after I turned the ign off then I turned off the head lights to kill the motor. He did a once around the car then hand me a list of things to fix and said he wouldnt give me a ticket if I promised never to bring that car back into Washington State again! Then he followed us to the border with his hazard lights on.
Ah to be 16 again. Car was still running 6 months later when I sold it :)

Re: Worst car you have owned

I had a 75 Chevy Vega 4 speed. When I got it (After my mother drove it for a few years) I almost had to floor it, pop the clutch and hope for the best. And yes it burned a lot of oil. I was running 20/50 just to slow down the usage. When I sold it, you could hear it coming around the corner from the knocking and pinging. The motor was louder than the exhaust was.

Also had a 71 Duster 3 on the floor. Hated that car almost more than the Vega.

My Father let me use an 85 Olds Calias (Spelling?) 3.0L FWD. I drove it for two years pulling a 17' Chris Craft all over the northern half of CA. When I gave it back to him and took the 84 F-150 he took it into the shop and all 4 motor mounts were sheered off and ground smooth. the only thing holding the motor in the car was the transaxle. That scared the **** out of me.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=13004&sort=7&thecat=500&password=

Craig

Re: Worst car you have owned

1977 VW Dasher.

We were very poor at the time, but I was mechanically inclined, so I bought the car on payments from the back yard of a friend, were the car died. I figured I could fix it.

Well, once I got the car running, it would never start when I wanted it too. I would go out in the morning and kill the battery trying to start it. Then I'd call a freind who gave me a ride to work. Then, an hour or so later my wife would go out and it would start with just a bump of the starter. I figured it must need a new fuel pump, but they cost $300, so I got one at a you pull it yard. I installed the new pump, but the problem persisted, every morning I'd kill the battery, then Dee would go out and it would start with a bump of the starter.

So I continued to tinker on the car, messing with the fuel pump one day, I had fuel all over the place, and I was messing with the wires that powered the pump when I touched something I shouldn't have and sparked a nice gas fire right under the fuel tank.

Well, I managed to put the fire out before the car went up (big mistake) and continued tinkering on it. So anyhow, I'm laying under the car and it is jacked up and I had it in gear so that I could remove the console to get to some wires. I am trying to figure out why it won't start first thing in the morning, but later starts with just a bump of the starter. This is about the time I accidently brush the starter solenoid with a screwdriver, and of course the no good crap heap springs to life and takes off....with me underneith it. It was a true miracle of God that I got out from under it without being run over, then I chase it across the parking lot of the apartment complex we were in, and stopped it before it hit anything.

After that it burned up every fuel pump I put in it. By the time I was done tinkering on it, it was declare well and truely dead, and repo'ed by the guy who wondered why I wasn't making payments on it. I told him all my car payment money, phone bill money, as well as some food money and rent money was spent each week trying get the sh1t heap running well enough to get me to work. Never not one time did that car start in the morning to get me to work, but every afternoon it would start for my wife so she could come pick me up.
