Re: Worst car you have owned
1977 VW Dasher.

We were very poor at the time, but I was mechanically inclined, so I bought the car on payments from the back yard of a friend, were the car died. I figured I could fix it.

Well, once I got the car running, it would never start when I wanted it too. I would go out in the morning and kill the battery trying to start it. Then I'd call a freind who gave me a ride to work. Then, an hour or so later my wife would go out and it would start with just a bump of the starter. I figured it must need a new fuel pump, but they cost $300, so I got one at a you pull it yard. I installed the new pump, but the problem persisted, every morning I'd kill the battery, then Dee would go out and it would start with a bump of the starter.

So I continued to tinker on the car, messing with the fuel pump one day, I had fuel all over the place, and I was messing with the wires that powered the pump when I touched something I shouldn't have and sparked a nice gas fire right under the fuel tank.

Well, I managed to put the fire out before the car went up (big mistake) and continued tinkering on it. So anyhow, I'm laying under the car and it is jacked up and I had it in gear so that I could remove the console to get to some wires. I am trying to figure out why it won't start first thing in the morning, but later starts with just a bump of the starter. This is about the time I accidently brush the starter solenoid with a screwdriver, and of course the no good crap heap springs to life and takes off....with me underneith it. It was a true miracle of God that I got out from under it without being run over, then I chase it across the parking lot of the apartment complex we were in, and stopped it before it hit anything.

After that it burned up every fuel pump I put in it. By the time I was done tinkering on it, it was declare well and truely dead, and repo'ed by the guy who wondered why I wasn't making payments on it. I told him all my car payment money, phone bill money, as well as some food money and rent money was spent each week trying get the sh1t heap running well enough to get me to work. Never not one time did that car start in the morning to get me to work, but every afternoon it would start for my wife so she could come pick me up.
