WOT boat handling issue...

The problem I am having is when I am at WOT and the boat is properly trimmed out the boat tends to want to point kinda downward to the left... Understand that this is at 67-70 mph. This a weight distribution problem?

Boat is a 89 Powerplay xlt
408 sbc (475hp)
alpha SS

at that speed even a tiny problem with the shape of the hull or mounting of the motor could cause this. I doubt its loading unless its a really large weight difference side to side.

Re: WOT boat handling issue...

I have two batteries on the port side and my trim motor on the starboard side... so with me or anyone not in the boat it does sit lower on the port side. But I figure with myself in the boat on the starboard side driving would counter the weight difference.

Had a similar problem, only a 85 17' larson, but it pulled hard just like that. Found the transom was bad, previous owner tightend the gimble bolts to stop the leak. Twisted the transom a bit to make it not square with the boat. Restoring as we speak. image.jpg

Common issue, not really a problem. Right hand prop torque.

Just lower your port side trim tab a little bit and problem solved. Of course, it might slow you down a tad. If you don't have trim tabs, slow down a little bit.

You may be able to adjust the zinc anode on your Alpha drive, to counter some of the torque.

BTW - how come that outdrive has not yet blown up, with all that power?

Uhh, wouldn't that lower the port bow even further? I would on mine ...

Duh! The issue was level. Lowering the port tab would level the boat. If he wanted to bring the bow up he would have to trim the outdrive up.

The suggestion to adjust the anode was a good one. But at 70 it probably wouldn't do the job.

The issue here is a complex one. More than just piddlydink adjustments. He needs a professional driver too!

Methinks that some of the numbers here may be off by just a wee little bit.

Chris, you may want to post your question over at screamandfly, they've got quite a few people there with high performance setup experience.

I did put a long straight edge under the hull to look for any hooks or imperfections and the hull is straight as an arrow. What might be happening is that I might be getting too much stern lift with the tempest plus... I was recommended to try a mirage 25 instead and give it some more trim.

And my numbers aren't off... motor was on a dyno and I use GPS to be accurate.

Powerplay is still in Pompano right? Did you give them a call? I used to powdercoat their parts in the 90's, nice guys. Other wise I'd definitely post on scream and fly or offshore only, their just isn't that many guys on here with much knowledge of that type of boat.

Could be the prop.
