Working on the motor today and I notice the carb butterflies were not completely open at WOT. This would keep the motor from running wide open but cant figure how to adjust it without changing the idle. Its like I need a longer stroke from the throttle control cable from the control box.

Before trying to adjust you will need the manual or the help of a mental clinic. It is a series of adjustments most of the time and can drive you up the wall without the manual.

I have the manual and all it discusses is the sync of the carbs. I just need another 1/4 inch of throttle. Would this be done in the control box?

Disconnect the throttle cable from the boat and do the linkage syncronization in the manual. Then see if the carbs open all the way. If they don't the problem is in the outboard linkage. If they are OK, then connect the throttle cable. If they don't open all the way the problem is with your throttle cable setup not the outboard.

thats what I have figured. I can open the carbs further with the cable disconnected. Is there typically an adjust on the control box to lengthen the stroke?

The piece on the end of the cable is adjustable. Loosen the nut locking it and turn the end counter clockwise to lengthen. You should as JMD said do the sych adjustment first.

Just a follow up I was able to adjust WOT position on control box which incresed stroke length without changing idle position.
