WOT question

Hi all, I have a 1972 Evinrude 9.5 That I use on a 12 Zodiac inflatable. I rarely if ever run it WOT. I get on the plane then back off the throttle a hair and I'm fine with that but my neighbor keeps saying I should run it at WOT at least once in awhile. He tends to be full of sh@# alot of the time so I thought I'd ask the experts. Am I harming my motor by not running it full out once in awhile? I run Seafoam in every tank of gas it the motor starts on the first pull cold everytime.

Re: WOT question

Its your motor run it as you want. Carbon build up is the only real thing to worry about and it looks like you've got that covered with the Seafoam so relax and enjoy your motor.

Personally, I like to run WOT. Especially with my kicker motors. They don't use much fuel so I don't see a reason not to unless the water is rough.

Re: WOT question

Seems every neigborhood has one of these self professed experts. Often these people have little foundation or knowledge for their opinions. Go ahead - ask him why he feels an outboard should be run wide open every once in awhile. Maybe he feels this will loosen up carbon buildup on the exhaust valves!!

Re: WOT question

No need...warm.. punch it out..back off a touch...worked the last 50 years for me..prolonged idle will load it up though..
