WOT timing

What is the correct timing for my 92 Johnson 115 crossflow? Carb cover is stamped 28 deg. BTDC. When I installed Boyensen power reeds I was told to retard timing by 2 deg. Will retarding timing reduce my rpms?

Re: WOT timing

Are you sure they said to reduce full advance? Or did they mention idle timimng?

WOT timing. Idle timing and wot timing are not independent on this motor.

Its strange they want you to reduce WOT timimng. I wouldnt. I know they are very concerned (rightlfuly so) about the motor "sneezing" at idle.

Re: WOT timing

It really depends on the set up and boat but yes, it will. How much depends on how the hull reacts to torque changes.

Re: WOT timing

After reading other posts about setting the timing without the motor being in the water I have a question. Is it necessary to wire the timing arm all the way forward on this motor or just full throttle? At full throttle I can still move the arm forward about half an inch. Feels like it's spring loaded.

The timer base should be fully advanced against the stop.

c/6
Hooty

There is no stop that I can see. Nothing that it hits against anyway.

Re: WOT timing

ReelDrag,With the controls at the full throttle position ,the timer base(under the flywheel) should be resting against a threaded stop with a rubber cap on it.Maybe that's what your problem is.Look and see if there is a threaded hole where the stop screw should be.

Re: WOT timing

I've looked through my manual and I can see what you're talking about. The pic I'm looking at is a 40hp. No mention of a timing stop for my motor. 1992 115.

Re: WOT timing

There is a threaded hole there but it has a bolt in it to hold the plate that the idle screw rests against.

Re: WOT timing

The timing advance stop screw should be in line with the linkage that connects the spark advance lever to the timer base. The piece that sticks out from the timer base that the linkage connects to is the part of the timer base that contacts the stop screw.

c/6
Hooty

HI reeldrag....

Just curious....I don't ever remember Boyesen reeds suggesting to retard timing to prevent "sneezing". What they do suggest is lowering idle air jet size a few sizes. Was this part of the instructions you got with the Reeds?

Re: WOT timing

On the 92 V4 CF linkage there is no stop with the rubber cap like most of the others.

There should be a threaded rod from the timer base going thru a plastic piece on the throttle arm. There should be a jam nut and thumb wheel for the spark adjustment. You can adjust low and high speed timing on these.

I'm still curious about exactly what Boyesen said about the timing. They've always been concerned about the idle but not the top timing.

The bottom line is, if your motor doesn't "sneeze" at idle you're OK. If it does I would adjust that with jetting not timing. Unless it sneezes because its out of sinc & link or has developed an air leak somewhere.

Re: WOT timing

Thanks Dhadley for clearing up the stop screw issue. I was beginning to think I was missing some parts. The person I talked to at Boyensen said my powerhead would live longer if the timing was retarded 2 deg. Not sure if it had anything to do with sneezing or not. They were concerned about carb jets but I'm good to go in that respect. In my original post I was only wanting to know the correct timing for this motor and/or what effect retarding the timing would have. 28deg seems high compared to the other motors listed in my manual.

Re: WOT timing

I set the timing on my 25hp 1988 Evinrude...
I had to set the timing 4* below the stamped BTC on the motor because I was setting it out of the water by pulling it over using a timing light.
The motor naturally advances by 4* at WOT when running. Hope this is some help....
