Would it be ok to lay a motor on it side.

I am restoring a 1983 Ranger with a Johnson 90 hp, last night I noticed that the hull of the boat has several chips that needs to be repaired. My question is can I take the motor off the boat and lay it flat on my garage floor with out hurting it or do I need to build a motor stand? I don?t have much room in my garage so I would like to be able to lay it flat on the floor if it will not hurt the motor. The motor will be off the boat for maybe 3 or 4 weeks.

If you would like to look at the pictures of the boat go to http://home.insightbb.com/~boats/

Thanks

Tony

I thought that it would be ok but thanks for confirming that for me. I am planning on putting furniture pads under the motor and over it to protect it.

Thanks again

Just take care not to get the lower unit HIGHER than the powerhead. You don't want any residual water to dribble into an open exhaust port in the powerhead...

Should be fine make sure the pads you use aren't something your real fond of sometimes when you lay them down the last of the gas in the carb bowls will drain out and on to the pads. I have also heard of people standing them up in a corner and securing them with rope to keep from tipping and pads under the skeg. How are you going to pull it off the boat? just make sure you have everything ready and disconnected so it can come right off and go right to where ever its going to be stored.

A friend has a engine hoist (cherry picker) to lift it off the transom. No I am not real fond of the pads, I have had those 20 some years and if they get gas, oil, grease or anything else, so be it.

Thanks for all the help.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but will setting a heavier V6 on it's side damage the cowl or the engine cover? Seems this could be a problem.

Just FYI, my engine stand, made out of 2 2X4's and a scrap 2X10, cost a total of $5.00 and about 2 hours worth of work.

MarkV If possible for the V-6 I would build a stand for it. that way it is in a good position to re install later down the road. When I redid my transom I threw together a stand for my 235 Evinrude and was glad I did. Seemed to make it so much easier to work on while off the boat and was a breeze to put back on when I completed the transom project. (Well as much of a breeze as 400# of outboard can be). I used 2X4 for the base and uprights and a 4' piece of 2X10 for the main beam. That way I could get upper and lower bolts through it.

Tony, If you remove the lower unit, you can make a stand for the midsection and powerhead easily out of 2X4s. The bottom of the midsection should sit on the base(four 2x4s nailed in a rectangle) of the stand and you need two verticle 2X4 and a cross piece to hold the transom clamp. Now two 45 degree braces from the transom clamp to the base and you have it licked.

Thanks to evryone for all the ideas. I will be building a stand this weekend and getting the motor pulled.
