On the a q125 a. Be sure you have the right impeller. Some people are using one that is slightly too big. It can cause you boat to jump time. It can also interfere with the timing advance and cause low rpm problems. Some parts places will give you the wrong one, make sure they double check the numbers.it happened to me.
Good luck ,happy boating

Re: Wrong impeller

When I bought mine, it had the wrong one in it. It was too big as well. Went through some other BS before I figured that one out. Somewhere out there theres a bad listing. Good lawd would that really make it jump time? I had put a new belt on mine and rebuilt the head before I ever ran it so luckily I never found that out! (Never actually ran it with the wrong one in there)
However, the motor was messed up from overheating when I got it, wonder why!:p

Re: Wrong impeller, Volvo AQ125 (AQ131, 151, 171)...?

Re: Wrong impeller, Volvo AQ125 (AQ131, 151, 171)...?

This would be much easier if you also did provide article numbers (which one impeller is deemed is right and which one is wrong)...

But that said...
On the AQ125A you have sea water pump 828026 (later replaced by pump 855578)
On the AQ131 and AQ151 we have sea water pump 855578
On the AQ171 I have sea water pump 855517

All carry impeller kit 875575. To me, the pumps are identical (part from the screw that retains the cam), but someone probably knows that better.

That said, I have NEVER managed to get the impeller in place without first removing the "cam" (item 10 on the pump schematics), and then reinstalling the cam (cam removal requires at a minimum removal of the copper sea water pipes, but I just pull the entire pump, since it's almost done when the pipes are disconnected).

So, I have never reflected over this, nor worried, but maybe there is something to it. In my case since the impeller is so "darn" hard to put in w/o removing the cam. Normal?

And, as a side note when looking at this:
"My" pump for AQ171: 855517, price $669.70
The pump for AQ151: 855578, price $396.13
A pretty significant difference for what appear to be the "same" pump (part from one little screw)...

Anyone with insight here, or did we just have too much time on our hands on gloomy monday evening...?

Then, when on the topic; When buying the impeller kit 875575, one always get a flimsy paper gasket that sure have no place on my pump, and does not seem to to go with the impeller (on a different pump) either since the diameter is way off. Anyone know where this gasket does belong? Looks almost like the gasket on some of the pumps on the AQ170, but then why packaged with an impeller that does not belong there?

My guess is you were all buying aftermarket impellers without finding the correct OEM impeller and pump number.

Nope, mine is a Volvo OEM impeller, direct from authorized VP dealer here in town.
875575 was the number on the VP box, and it came with plastic gasket, impeller, the "key", lubricant, as well as that odd "paper" gasket.

But the second kit (never used, just keeping as a spare) is correctly a Sierra kit.

I will likely pull the impeller in a few weeks when winterzing, can refer back with what number is on the hub (think I remember seeing some markings on the hub).

On the aq125a, the impeller is a little smaller. Many people think all the Volvo four bangers use the same one. Many marina parts people think this true. I had been given the wrong one. All I'm saying is make sure your parts person checks the book before you buy it. I like a lot of people on this site don't know all the part numbers and rely on my part dealer. If this is a common mistake just keep an eye out

Still strange since the VP part number is the same across the range of pumps...
