Re: Wth??

My guess would be someone who doesn't have the brains to fix a $100 problem and is dumping a boat for several thousand less than it is worth. Of course it may just be that the engine is completely trashed and that is why they have had it sitting for 3 years in an unusable state.

Nah, that's what it's worth in today's economy. It's only 16' and not very popular when everybody wants a 20' or better. It's a entry level Brunswick boat. 4,000 - 5000 tops not running (and it isnt).

Offer him $800 because its a second rate boat made by an unknown manufacturer. Maybe its even a kit boat. Just check out NADA - Fourwinds is not listed!

In the ad he does say it has ALWAYS been covered... I guess that literally means always!

Sure Monty Hall, I will take what's under the tarp instead of what is behind door number 2!

One of my pet peeves as far as Craigslist is concerned is people trying to sell a boat by posting pictures with the cover on. I have seen it time and time again. I figure they are either trying to hide something or are simply too dumb to understand the value of pictures in making a sale. Usually the latter I suspect.

I bought a boat less than 2 weeks ago, so I'm not even in the market. I'm just amazed at the stupidity of some people. First the cover is on in all 4 pics, and then he says that the boat has sat for the past 3-4 years. I'm sure that it's in perfect condition once those pumps are replaced.

AND THAT is why country music sells....God is great, beer is good and people are crazy!

Re: Wth??

My two cents.

People, even good boating people, are not always salesmen. I have been searching for and calling about boats for months. I've probably called or e-mailed on over 30 boats. More often than not, I get a call to my cell phone like this: "...uh, hi (sometimes yeah), you called about my boat.?...". Most of the time I try to coerce them into telling me about their boat, but that usually fails and I give up. Everyone likes to make fun of salesmen but I'm sure after hunting for a boat, there is something special about a salesmen. If you're selling a boat, be prepared for someone who is completely clueless about your boat.

I agree with Jim. That was my first cringe at the ad - misspelling the brand of boat you paid thousands for. If the guy is too, umm, 'uneducated' to know what he's selling, he may well believe it's a homemade boat, and worth jack.

When I see adds on cl that do not include pictures I don't even open them anymore. And I just love it when it's added, "pictures available on request". If you have pictures then why not post them? I feel it's just laziness for the most part. Also only pictures of a boat with the cover on is about as useful as a picture of the boat in the garage with the door closed! Believe me it's in there!

One of those pictures looks like the boat had been in a wet slip some, but who knows.. Those pictures suck... I would have to go stick my head under that cover and she what she looked like.. Thats a gravy fix, so kinda sounds shady.. Plus gotta think about freeze damage and fuel issues.. Offer a 1000

Re: Wth??

Those are the ads I count on. I know that most buyers aren't going to take the time to ask for a pic or go take a look. I might be the one to get a great deal just because I was willing to do a little more leg work.

I responded to an ad last night that was classic. I can't access CL from work but the gist of it was this:

"XYZ deck boat. $3100. Summer's coming, won't last long!"

No details about year, motor, length, construction, location and no pics. The only contact was the CL re-mailer.

I would also be interested in how long he ran it when the waterpump went out??? Without being about to sea trial it is a non running boat.

The joke was on me on this one. I replied to the ad with a request for more information and it turned out to be a scam.

I got a long e-mail with a sob story about how this poor, pregnant widow had lost her husband in Afghanistan and needed to sell the boat. Unfortunately, she had been forced to move and had left the boat with a shipping company. She was asking $3100 but would take $2850 if I would buy it today or tomorrow...

There is a special place in hell for people like this.
