Hi everyone,

i just recently purchased an 09 E-TEC 25hp. I was reading through the manual and it said that if I were to use XD100 oil, I should go to the dealer. I am not sure what oil is currently being used in there right now but it’s about half full.

should I be taking the motor in to determine which oil is being used and for them to change the setting to use xd100? Or is it safe once the oil is almost used up to just put it in?

Thanks

you can use xd-100 at any setting

but not TCW3 oils at xd -100 setting !!!

have the dealer check it out but usually there is a plastic tag under the hood to tell you the setting it is at

In my experience I want an engine to use a lot of oil. I prefer to have it set at tcw-3. Then use the xd-50. Saves money over the super expensive xd-100. It will use more oil though but for longevity in my opinion it's worth it. The xd-100 setting I believe is there to satisfy the California environmentalists ridiculous standards. They had to develop some crazy stuff to keep them happy. We have had a bad time with the big v-6 motors when set at the xd-100 setting. The same motors at tcw3 setting seem to fair better. Granted small sample size. 8 motors in a rental operation. For full disclosure I have not noticed an issue with the xd-100 setting on the smaller motors (90hp and under).

Super Expensive XD100? Last year it was only $8(can)/jug more than the XD50. It is a full synthetic vs. the synthetic blend XD50.

Myself I like to see a lot of smoke from an outboard. It can help keep the Mosquitoes away and in most cases smells nice.

Its all about scale.

I buy oil by the case. A case (6) of XD100 is $204. A case (6) of Pennzoil Premium Plus is $98. XD 50 normally runs @ $129 a case (6).

On average, I burn 30 gallons of oil a season. The boat runs fine on XD 50 or Premium Plus.

What does XD 100 bring to the table to justify spending an additional $500 in oil annually?

BTW: In my world smoke = sea sick and barf
