XR2 Questions/Issues

Hello All,
I replaced the power head on my '85/'86 V-150 XR2 over the winter. I turned it over for the first time this weekend and it started right up. I was pretty excited considering this is my first boat and boat project. Anyway I have a couple questions. How hot do these motors typically run? I just want to have an idea what is the normal operating temp for these motors. I have a temp. gauge mounted in the panel on the bow of the boat but it only reads C for Cold and H for hot. I let the motor run a bit using the rabbit ears in the driveway at idle for maybe 5 minutes. I was using a hand-held laser temp sensor pointing it at the cylinders and it got up to about 180 degrees before I turned it off. Again I am new to boat mechanics and not sure of the effects of running the motor out of the water using the rabbit ears. I now you are not supposed to rev the motor but wasn't sure about length of time and how this could affected the running temp. I guess I might want to consider a new gauge with number readings for starters.
The other issue I have which I also had before replacing the power head was the alarm would sound as soon as the motor started. After replacing the power head I still have the same issue. When I turn the key toward start the alarm beeps twice, then after the motor starts i beeps constantly even when the motor is cold. I have removed the oil injection system and installed the block off, the sensor is also removed and the wires are disconnected (light blue and white wires). The temp sensors are all new, replaced just about everything on the power head.

Let me know if anyone can shed some light on these two topics. Thanks all.

You need to remove the oil alert module completely, or at least the wiring.

You really can't tell much about the cooling unless it's in the lake. A long hose on muffs sometimes won't supply enough water to keep it cool, even at idle.

I think the stats are set at 140 something. I think they tend to run a little warm at mid speed, just before the poppits open. I assume anything less than making steam is OK on mine.

hope it helps

Re: XR2 Questions/Issues

Thanks for the reply John, that was my thought on the cool issue was well. It was a long hose. I am going to take it to the ramp this weekend and pop it into the lake and see what happens. I will keep you posted. I have read by doing more searching that the thermostats are at 140 or 145 and the motor should be about 140 - 160 degrees but I did read some guys getting as high as 180 at idle or no wake zones. I am really hoping that is all it is. After 3500 for a new power head plus all the other stuff and time I would be pretty bent if I have to track this issue down after replacing just about everything. Then again I did by a boat:)

Re: XR2 Questions/Issues

If you figure for the thermal resistance of the cylinder wall and water jacket materials, I think 140 degree water jacket at WOT with about 300,000 btu of fire in each hole would be about the same as 300 degrees or so at idle.

In other words, anything below boiling is probably just fine, in fact a warmer idle should take some of the shock out of hammering it.

Have a good ride.

Just to be sure, after you run it a bit, pull the plugs and look for anything unusual, like milk, or a super steam cleaned one. Deal with it right away if you find something amiss.

hope it helps
