Ok, I replaced my old outdrive (alpha1) with another alpha one and the y pipe is not matching up. I am almost done with this hell of a task that I took on and now I have this issue holding up the engine install. I dont know if the newer outdrive that I put on is a gen 2 or what. everything has bolted right up until this point. I have included pics of the old ypipe and the new outdrive im trying to put it on. Someone please help me if you know what y pipe I need. Thank you. engine is a merc 228 , boat is a 1980 if that info helps.

btw, I have 4 allen head bolts that came out of the old one and a long bolt, this new drive takes 5 bolts with no long bolt

What year is the outdrive u are installing, its likely that if your boat is a 1980 then you have a pre alpha y-pipe, if the new drive is newer you will need a alpha one y-pipe.

the alpha one y pipe is oval, or the one that goes with this drive is. I called the guy I got the outdrive from, he has the y pipe that went with it , it only has 4 bolts. the hole that has no bolt even in my y pipe is not inside the o ring. so would it hurt to plug the hole up that has the long bolt that I will not be using and just bolt the y pipe up I have. it lines up with o ring , I would think that's all that matters.

If you look at the "seal surface", you will see the 4 bolt sits the same way!

but what about the hole from the 5th long bolt ? do I need to plug that hole or dies it get closed off since the new drive has no hole there anyway. I hope I'm not being confusing

It goes nowhere. The big "opening" is exhaust. The smaller "holes" are water. Why do you have an issue with the long bolt? The housing hasn't changed in 30+ years. The "Y-pipe" has, defenitly!
4 bolts & it's on!
