yahama gear change

since having lower drive shaft fitted i am unable to put into gear smoothly,it goes in with a 'clunk'and engine sometimes 'dies'.can anyone help me with a reason?ta ej

its supposed to clunk. its a mecanical fit. the engine dying is most likly another problem. a few details about make, model and year may be a tad useful.<br /> so welcome to iboats and read the first time poster section

thanks for the advise[new to this game]the engine was bought in 1980 but does not have many hours of running only used for a couple of fishing trips a year.back to the engine,it is a yamaha 55 hp bought in 1980 acouple of years ago i hit a rock which broke the lower drive shaft,replaced same and the found difficulty with gear selection.why any ideas welcomed.i am going to have it serviced to try and find out what caues the engine to ''die''
