Hi all fellow iboaters!

Just got back from my summer vacation. My boat (1994 1750 Caravelle BR) ran great (afterall, it got a nice new engine) - not a single major problem. Just a small one :) The boat "smoked" quite a lot - there are black stains all around the hull. I think it's the carb, but i don't know exactly at what to look. The carb was rebuilt before the season. What do you experts think? Is the level too high? Needles? Jets? Idle screws? I noticed that when there was high load on the engine (like skiing) the smoke was more intense than when running normal. Any suggestions?

Thanx in advance!

Alex

I am having exactly the same problem. I am not so mechanically inclined so it is going into the shop tomorrow and I will let you know what they do.

What color was the smoke? White, blue, or black? White is high temp, blue indicates burning oil, and black indicates an overly rich fuel mixture. I would not throw your carb out just yet.

The smoke was black, smelling like gas all the time. The choke didn't stuck (it did, to be exact, but it's open all the time - don't need it anyway). The base engine is BRAND NEW!

I am not sure what the engine being new has to do with not needing the choke but with out the choke you are going to have starting issues, new or not. I assume it is stuck open based on the above post.

As far as the black smoke, obviously the engine is running too rich. That is why it is starting with out the choke. This can be caused by the carb not being adjusted right or needing some repair/rebuild. I suggest you get a rebuilt carb from a reputable place and swap it out and see if that solves the smoking. problem. Also, hook up the choke right so you can get started once you solve the flooding/rich operation issues.

What can you tell us about the motor/carb combination? If it's black smoke, then yes, you're running rich. If it is just at idle, then likely can be adjusted out. If you are getting heavy black smoke at all speeds, then good possibility the float level is set incorrectly in your carb, or the floats are junk. I've also seen this happen when the fuel pressure is too high.

It is a 3.0 GM base engine (originally a Volvo) - the smoke is coming out all the time (when driving also). The choke is stuck open, as you guessed. The carb is a 2bbl holley. Which reputable place would you recommend for buying a rebuilt carb?

Rebuild or get out your check book. Marine carbs are not cheap. If you don't want to do it yourself look in your local yellow pages and find a re builder. It should cost half or less then a new one.

Listen to Bondo. Don't buy a new carb, have the shop that replaced the engine check it. It might just need adjusting. Sounds like it's running way to rich. Doesn't mean the carb is junk. I don't understand advice that tells someone just flat out to go buy a carb without having the existing one checked first. This same persons advice all to often is throw LOTS of money at the problem and HOPE it goes away. The purpose of this forum is to try to REPAIR first, then replace if absolutley necessary. If you are not comfortable with the repairs yourself, find a reputable shop for the repairs. Hope this helps

If you have a mechanical fuel pump, it could be leaking internally and dumping raw fuel into the carb (Like it is supposed to if it goes bad)(Check the clear plastic tube between the carb and fuel pump for gas) This would cause you to run rich and have a lot of black smoke. Especially at slower speeds.
So will a stuck or inoperative automatic choke.

Chokes are "stuck" open, they are supposed to be open, when activated it closes... so they typically get stuck closed as in choking the air supply.

Hmmmm.... my mechanic rebuilt it before we installed the new engine - the carb was in a poor condition, all seized up with mud... I used a genuine Holley rebuilt kit, so all the balls, needles, gaskets aso. were replaced. He did all the adjustments, so i wonder what could he done wrong? What should / can i check? Don, the fuel line is clear... Already checked that... The choke is open / stays open all the time...

Are the air bleeds clear to the metering block? If not it can cause it to syphon.

Re: YAHOO!!! Back from my summer boating holidays... Only some smoking problems.

Just checked the plugs... All covered with black soot... that means it's the carb, right? Will check the air bleeds, but i think they're all right. The carb was intensely blown out with a compressor when rebuilt - still, will check that option. I tip on the float though. How to check if it works? And how to set the level right? The choke is done for, i think. Doesn't move at all... Gotta check the coil if it works...
