yam pro50 slow warm up

I have a 1988 yam pro50 which I took to the lake yesterday for a test run. It starts right up but keeps dying when I put it in gear. after it warms up a while it runs fine. I start it with the electric choke. Should I also use the manual choke? Also i have a 6 gallon portable tank which does not seem to be vented, is that normal?
