Yamaha 115 4 stroke speedometer

The digital speedometer associated with my '03 115 four stroke does not read correctly. It wont read any speed until I get the hull on plane. After slowing down, it reads faster than the actual speed. Acts like the pick up tube is blocked. Before I get into this, I thought it would be smart to find out who else has had this issue. Its not very obvious what becomes of the pick up tube once it enters the lower unit on the outboard. Any tips or experiences with this one?

clean the pickup tube and check the riggiung for a pinched speedo tube.
the tube is located on the leading edge of the gearcase.
