Please help me the problem i am having is i have oil spitting out of the air intake and motor will not go over 2000 rpm. Just bought this boat and motor and it only has about 40 hrs on motor when i bought it. I only got to put it in the water twice and now this......some one please help me if anyone has any idea what the problem is or have heard or had this problem how much i can expect to pay to fix.

1st thing to do is check some things out yourself, so you can give some info.

Compression or even better a leakdown test of all cylinders to see if they are sealing properly

Check oil level to see if it is over full from fuel contamination

Do you have gauges that show RPMs and alarms and are the alarm systems working/ coming in while running motor?

Post your motor Model # so everyone knows what motor you are dealing with

got the call just now leakdown average was about 40 to 50% and they said they do not know if it is the rings or the valves . it only has 41 hrs on the motor they said it is because it was not run enough. hell i never heard of that before. it is a f115 yamaha 4 stroke

There is an important break-in procedure on these engines to seat the rings and such I believe but i'm no expert. A friend bought a new F200 a few years ago and was told to run it for approx. 20 hrs. at various RPMs, never staying at any given rpm for long periods and never at WOT during the break-in period. It was fun cruising around the lake in his nice 23' Maycraft CC trying to find or make some waves to see how it would handle offshore for 20 hrs on 4 days! Good luck w that and keep us posted. Is there a warranty from the seller??

they said 5 grand to fix but they are still not sure what the problem is and the oil is never over full because it is all blowing out the air silencer box

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

Find another place, the leak down test will show a trained tech where the pressure is leaking out of.
pressure coming out of intake, exhaust, or the crankcase will say what is leaking

did you ever check the oil level to see what it was?

i had to put 2 and1/4 quarts in it and wiped it all down . i ran the motor for about 15 min put it back on the trailer and checked under the bonnet and fresh oil was sprayed out of the air intake silencer box again and oil level was a little lower than when i started

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

Where was the level at after putting in the 2 1/4 quarts? Why did you add that oil?
Could it have been over full? They say to not fill to top line.

Was the leak down bad on all cylinders?

Leak by on rings is the only thing that I can think of that would push oil out, but do not think it would come out intake unless it it is pushing it out of a crankcase breather that goes to intake.

Maybe rings are stuck or rusted from sitting if it was not stored properly.

I would find a shop that has a Yamaha master tech to look at the motor

no oil on dip stick what i put in brought it to the middle of the cross hatch. they said it was bad on all cylinders. well im fixing to go over there an it will not be pretty. they said i owe 5 hundred bucks for **** they changed and i made it clear when i dropped it off to make sure to call me and get permission well 2 weeks later i get the first call and they were only suppose to check the motor not change a thing so they gonna have a big problem this morning

This does not sound good,
keep us posted on what you find out on motor as this has me scratching my head also

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

I know what happened and its going to take a rebuild. Ran into this a few months back on the same engine. How old is the gas? The F115 doesn't have a knock sensor and when the octane level drops on the fuel, it predetonates the cylinders and eats the side of the pistons up. Had one come in and after pulling the head, found damage on the pistons but not like running lean damage. Phoned my Yamaha tech rep and asked him. He asked if it had a white plastic tank that was exposed to the sun and I answered yes. UV rays decompose the new fuels very quickly and the signs I saw was due to low octane.
The engine showed the same symptons, blowing oil out the intake and I remember it was just over $4,000 by the time we finished the rebuild. Yamaha has the only correct pistons and they come with rods already assembled. $$$$$
And I agree on finding another repair facility. A leakdown test will tell you where the air is bypassing. That's the purpose of it.

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

they told me it was due to severe carbon build up and i asked about the leakdown test and he said it only tells how much is leaking past the rings and the oil blow in the intake is from the valves not seating but all they really said was that it was the carbon so i just did a shock treatment of ring free and no noticable oil spray from intake ill do another shock and then go and run it in the river a few minutes oil level is fine after a 30 min. shock treatment he said a few of those may get the problem solved like it may not ill give it a go and if that dont work ill go and get a second opinion. and the gas in it was brand new i took it out 2 week before labor day and filled it then on labor day this problem happened

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

If intake valve is leaking during leak down you can hear air coming out of intake, if exhaust valve is leaking during leak down you can hear air coming out of prop exhaust, if leaking past rings you will hear it coming out of dip stick tube.

I personally do not see how a intake valve not sealing would blow oil out of intake.

Doing a compression test yourself or leak down test before and after would help you tell if the shock treatments are helping.

Hope it will clear it up for you.
If it does keep using it at normal dose and check to make sure motor is set up and propped correctly

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

if i knew how to do any of the test i would do it all my self but i dont have the time or the tools to start trying to figure out how to do all of that. i just dropped it off at master marine in lafayette louisiana and he basically said that the idiots at redmonds marine are just a bunch of hacks and are always quick to tell ppl it needs to be overhauled. this is what they said. performed leakdown test on engine. #1-40%leakdown #2-50%leakdown #3-60%leakdown #4-40%leakdown. shock treated engine once, checked leakdown again, numbers did not change. 2 possibilities , stuck rings or leaking valves or valve guides. all of the spark plugs are very corroded, engine running very lean. one of the plugs is very bad. excessive carbon build-up inside engine, on rings, cylinder walls and valves.only 44 hrs on motor

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

Valve guides are not in combustion chamber so I do not see how they would be involved in cylinder leak down test,
but guides can cause motor to burn oil and carbon up maybe.

Very lean running motor may cause piston damage also and grab rings. will probably have to open it up to see for sure.

I have read that the new fuels can desolve resins in some of the fuel tanks and then deposit that reside inside the motor as it burns the fuel causing piston and cylinder wall damage
Keep us up to date

Did you have to pay the $500?

no i only paid the 2 hours of labor. after they almost called the police on me cause i told the owner if i had to pay the 500 i was waiting for him when he left and i would have taken it out his ***.. what would possibly make it run so lean i have 89 octane and ring free what else should i do and the fuel i use has no ethanol

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

If it is a injected motor there are filters and screens all through the fuel system including the injectors that will restrict the fuel pressure and flow.

If you ran motor 2 quarts low on oil it may have hurt other parts. but I hope not.

I have delt with Yamaha for years. Try calling Yamaha and tell them what you are dealing with. They treat thier customers pretty well.

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

Did you discuss this with the place/person you just bought from? I'd make sure they were involved because it sounds like the sold you a problem. Did you test it out before you bought it?

Sorry to hear you are having these problems, I have a 2002 115 4 stroke and I have had very few issues with it, but you got to run them to keep them running!

Re: yamaha 115 4 stroke

Oil in the air intake can be caused by a number of things. Often it's as simple as a bad timing belt or plugged crank case ventillation. in any case, oil is getting into the intake indicating that the valves are either out of time or the seats are shot or one is burnt or broken. Oil could be comming in from the stems but it would be a fairly small amount and usually is indicated by a puff of smoke at startup and then it clears.

A broken or damaged piston could be the culprit but a simple compression test would tell you that. From the sounds of what your mechanic is telling you, that's not the problem. Hard to say for sure, without knowing the compression results. Iif it was a broken pistion, you would be making oil as fuel would be entering the crankcase and the oil would have a muddy appearance.
