I have a 1997 S 150 TXRV.

The problems are;

Boat will only pull 5000 RPM max with a 15P prop

When getting on throttle aggressivly from a stop boat has a surge around 3500 RPM. It is wierd, hammer the throttle and motor cuts out for a split second then goes.

The boat had a very faint lean sneeze idling back into dock. It has only done this twice.

The trouble shooting I have done so far is;

compression check yesterday. All numbers are 10% or better between cylinders, lowest is 125 PSI

Spark test, number 1 had weak spark.

Maint done to this point;

Replaced all spark plugs, all spark caps, replaced #1 coil due to weak spark. re-tested spark and it is where it should be.

Only trouble shooting not done is a vacume test (I don't have the tool) on the fuel system, which for this problem is probrobly the test I need to do the most.

So with out the correct equipment I am leaning towards a fuel related problem. But I did find the weak spark on #1. I wounder if I should water test the boat, then if I continue to have problems buy the vacume gauge and test the fuel system.

What would you guys do? I can't see spark causing the cut out when agressive on the throttle. Seems like the boat runs out of gas then catches up. Anything else I can check for this problem?

i would give it a water test then go on to the vac test if issues are still there. the weak spark could have caused what you described.

I have seen weak spark cause a plug not to fire under heavy load before. It takes more voltage to jump the gap under compression.
A fuel vacuum gauge can be picked up at Sears for less that $30.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

the sneezing would indicate a lean situation,have you cleaned the carbs?

No sir. I have not cleaned the carbs yet. I want to get the propper tool (Vacume Guage) to trouble shoot the system before I spend money on the re-build kits.

And I really want to find out exactly what is causing my problems. I belive a carb clean/rebuild would mask the problem.
