Oil alarm was going off, plenty of oil in external tank, internal reservior was below minimum line. used manual pump switch to raise above line, engine then ran with alarm for a minute and then alarm went off. All seemed to be well, then oil reservior continued to fill to the top, well above high oil line and engine started smoking terribly.....tried to burn it off but no luck. Plugs then fowled....need some help from here? thanks!

You need to test the oil system starting with the oil sending sensor/

I think rodbolt is still vacationing. There have been a number of posts on this since Yamaha has used basically the same system for over 15 years on their oil injected motors. The oil tank sensor, wiring and sometimes the manual switch have been the main culprits for this problem.

quick test
cut the tie strap on the engine oil tank water trap. drain the oil until the tank is empty. make sure the remote tank is at least half full.
turn the key on
at key on with the remote tank at least half full the engine oil tank should refill and shut off transfer within 180 seconds.
if it does not or over fills further testing will be required. if it fails to fill replace the remote tank filter and check fot restrictions between the remote and engine tanks.
if it over fills I need more information.

Re: Yamaha 2001 HPDI Z150 Oil sending problem

When it did overfill as described above, I did drain as you describe, however, I only drained it to the lower oil level line in the reservior. Then I started the motor up and it quickly overfilled the tank, causing smoke and fouling etc. Under normal circumstances, is there a sensor to prevent overfill or is the refill mechanism run for a pump oil in for set amount of time no matter what? thanks for inputs gents!

The sensor in the tank tells the cdi to turn on or off the pump. Rodbolt has trouble shot a bunch of these for different units, but it only works if you listen and follow his instructions exactly. There are a number of posts on this a search will reveal.

I need to know the wire colors on your engine oil tank switch. then I need to know if you have a multi meter and some jumper leads, and are you color blind?
its a very simple system but several things are happening at once.
