Hi! New one here, hope to get some help, have a big problem with my Yamaha 225hp.
The problem is: Having trouble some time now. The motor can be hard to start sometimes, but got it fixed yesterday, now it starter easy. But now its hard to power up the gas even when its not in gear, and when i put in gear, the motor just dies out. Went great for an hour or so yesterday, but then it fell back to the problems again. Anyone got a tip? Checked the coils, one was dead, and bad connection on another, fixed them, but the problems came back.
Can it be ignition problems, gas problems or what? Pretty desperate, would be greatful to get in touch with someone who can help me!
I also have a 703 control box,is it the right one for my engine anyone? Can the controlbox have anything to say here?
Thanks for all help,i need it!

Re: Yamaha 225 problem

Thanks, but not excactly what i wanted to hear!
I bought it 2 years ago,its a 94 mod.
Never went correctly, knew that when i bought it, but believed it was a small matter. As i said i got it running just great saturday, after fixing som electrical problems(bad connection) and a couple of coils. Went for a ride for an hour, stopped ant took a soda, and when i was to start again,it started great, backed out and put it forward and the motor died. Started up ten times more, but did die when put in gear everytime. Removed the fuelfilter and when dropping gas into sea many small pearls appeared in the sea. Happened several times, and when i mounted that again, the motor started pretty easily again, but not for long. After a while same problem, just dies when i try to speed up.
On the carborator?(three of them), it is mountet a "pot meter" that i was told was the "ignition controller". It has three wires, and the red one is almost broke, looks really bad. The potmeter follows the gas, turns when you want more gaas, what excactky is that for? Ty so far!
Terje

Re: Yamaha 225 problem

its a potentiometer
it tells the computer what the throttle angle is. the computer will then set the ign timing accordingly. if you had water in the fuel filter odds are its in the carbs now. by the fact that you have 3 carbs and the old style TPS(throttle position sensor) I am going to guess you have and old 1989 or older excel. you still have not posted enough info to Identify the motor..
however you describe water in the carbs, clean them out, replace the fuel pumps if they are more than 3 years old.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha 225 problem

hello
also if the TPS has bare wires it will need replacing. its not hard but it does require a test harness and a digital multi meter.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha 225 problem

Ok. Maybe it isnt a 94 then, the seller told me so 2 yeares ago. **** same, the problem still remains!
The Nr. on the carbs is: 6R 500 621400-601 , if that helps......
Wouldnt i get those symptomes if the TPS is broken? Or if i got water in the gas?
Terje
Ps! Norwegian summer sucks this year!

Re: Yamaha 225 problem

I need the model # from the transom bracket.
it could be a 94. the model number will identify the motor. you have described a water in the fuel problem but the TPS operation should be verifed as well.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Yamaha 225 problem

Im not sure if that helps rodbolt, the transom bracket has been replaced i think,or the powerhead has been replaced. Im aware of that, but the transom says 200BETO, and thats a 200hp to me,but i think maybe the powerhead is replaced. It has 2 fuelpumps as far as i can see,and on top of the(over them) it sits a thing that looks like a fuelpump, but it has 2 magnetic switches on it and three vacuum? hosts, one for each carb.....
Why do you have to replace fuelpumps, aint it enough to replace the....what is it called.....the things that sit inside the fuelpumps, cant remember the word, sorry.
