I have a 1997 Yamaha 4 HP - model 4MSHV - the shift control is frozen in reverse. Last fall I was greasing the motor before putting it away and broke off the grease nipple on the lower casing that the shift control goes through. This spring, I intended to remove the old grease nipple and replace it. While I was drilling out the old nipple, I started getting grey plastic on the drill bit. Not sure if these problems are related to why the shift control is stuck. I tried to take off the leg to get at the problem, but I couldn't get them separated. I am guessing that the 4 bolts inside the bottom casing have to come out also. If so that sounds like shop work because I can't see how to get at them. I was hoping for a simple solution. Any suggestions besides take it into the shop?
